Crawling Back

A young man returns to his childhood home and rediscovers a long-forgotten spot that housed his most cherished childhood memories.

As the first student production for my advanced directing course, we were assigned to create a short film with the topic of “evoking childhood”. My immediate thought went to the crawl space basement in my parents’ house but unlike most crawl space, it was a cozy secluded area with furnished carpet paddings and loads of toy to play with amongst all of the regular storage. The fact that you had to literally hunch down and crawl through the entrance to access the area helped evoke similar imagery of the main character being transported to a magical world and wanted to emphasize the wonder and childhood nostalgia of the space through the shift in color temperature and music.
